2001 Sportswoman of the Year Award Finalists AnnouncedAugust 27, 2001 • It will be ladies night on Monday, October 15, 2001, when the Women’s Sports Foundation salutes the top female athletes at the organization’s 22nd Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Star athletes and celebrities from film and television will come together to celebrate the best individual and team performances of the year. An impressive list of athletes from 20 different sports will be vying for the top honors - Sportswoman of the Year in the team and individual sport categories. The awards recognize the athletes for their incredible achievements as members of a team and as individual performers. The finalists for the 2001 Individual Sportswoman of the Year Award are: Carolyn Dorin Ballard (bowling, United States); Jennifer Capriati (tennis, United States); Inge DeBruijn (swimming, Netherlands); Stacy Dragila (track and field, United States); Siri Lindley (triathlon, United States); Michelle Kwan (figure skating, United States); Ellen MacArthur (sailing, Great Britain); Andrea Raducan (gymnastics, Romania); Mary Riddell (disabled skiing standing class, United States); Annika Sorenstam (golf, Sweden); and Ryoko Tamura (judo, Japan). The finalists for the 2001 Team Sportswoman of the Year Award are: Jen Adams (lacrosse, Australia); Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar (beach volleyball, Brazil); Jennifer Botterill (ice hockey, Canada); Jen Davidson and Jean Racine (bobsled, United States); Lisa Fernandez (softball, United States); Lisa Leslie (basketball, United States); Tiffeny Milbrett (soccer, United States); Delphine Regeard (marathon orienteering, France); and Coralie Simmons (water polo, United States). Every year the Women’s Sports Foundation dinner attracts an extraordinary list of champion female athletes, and this year’s gala is no exception. Over 100 are expected to attend, including Women’s Sports Foundation Founder Billie Jean King (tennis), Foundation President Julie Foudy (soccer), Michelle Akers (soccer), Bonnie Blair (speed skating), Nadia Comaneci (gymnastics), Donna de Varona (swimming), Janet Evans (swimming), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (track and field), Sheryl Swoopes (basketball) and Sportswoman of the Year nominees Stacey Dragila (track and field), Lisa Fernandez (softball) and Lisa Leslie (basketball).
