Parsec Speakers Series Final Kick
February, 2005 • Recap of Siri Lindley and Lorraine Moller - This week: Chris Lear, Ritz and Torres
Last Thursday, Parsec Time & Distance held its 3rd in its 4-part speaker series featuring World Champion Triathlete, now Olympic commentator and coach Siri Lindley. Also speaking was 4-time Olympian and the most successful women's marathoner and Lydiard disciple, Lorraine Moller. Siri started off the evening telling the horror stories of her early experiences; never had swam before, sprinting for 50 yards at a time before doubling over, then sprinting another 50 yards in the run... But it was her sheer will to want to succeed and dedication which elevated her to World Champion. The ever humble Lindley is now coaching a small amount of athletes who call themselves "Sirious Athletes". They moved to Boulder so they could train together every day. She has an amazing clientele, one of whom is Olympic Bronze Medalist Susan Williams. Siri touched on mental focus and being the best athletes we can: "There is always one thing that holds us back. A certain fear that we refuse to face. Once you figure that limiting factor out anything is possible." "Surround yourself with those are better than you. Embrace the challenge and learn from it. Go forward." Siri is a strong believer in what you do in training you will do in a race. "Step to the line and know what your capable of." "Most importantly, take care of yourself" She added. Editors note: The "Siri Lindley" [Hot Chocolate] remains the best seller at the Endurance Cafe in the front of Parsec Time & Distance.
Lorraine Moller took the mic after Siri's inspirational stories. Making her marathon debut in 1979, Moller reeled off eight consecutive marathon victories, and nine from her first 10 starts. She competed in four successive Olympic marathons, beginning with the Los Angeles race in 1984, the first Olympic women’s marathon ever held. Moller was very methodical about her goals and training. "This is where I am today, this is where I want to be [in 4 years], now, how do I get there. You have to focus on your training so that you can create your plan." A native New Zealander, Moller attributes her longevity in the sport to Arthur Lydiards training principals. Enjoying motherhood and still coaching a few athletes, Moller has taken up writing her memoirs with the encouragement of Mike Sandrock. She finished off the evening by reading a few excerpts from the text. The book is soon to be finished and will be sold at Parsec Time & Distance along with other local bookstores.
